Ateliers Westerdok offers a variety of drawing and painting program to both beginners and more advanced levels. A wide range of different courses with professional guidance from specialized art teachers are on offer. You can develop your creative skills and knowledge about art here in an informal, personal atmosphere - and produce surprising new work!

The full annual programme of both the basic year and the follow up year consists of 6 modules of each containing approx. 6 lessons - together 38 lessons a year. The basic year and the follow-up year is two years, 4 seasons. It's possible to enroll per season with 3 modules. The lessons are given by various art teachers in predetermine modules.Every year there is a new season start in February and in September.
FlexWould you like to draw and paint regularly, but you cannot bind to a fixed day or are you going away for a while, then you can buy a flex card of 10 lessons. If you want to follow two or more lessons a week, then you can buy a flex-unlimited. When signing up, you let us know which regular course will be your main choice. You follow your lessons there as much as possible. But you are free at any time to follow lessons from other courses. Only courses with sufficient enrolments, are offered in our final program. The final program is determined and made known after the notifications in the first week of February or mid-September. The flex card is personal and cannot be used for workshops or Open Studio specials. The flex card is valid for 4 months after purchase. During the summer holidays, there are no lessons and your subscription is 2 months still.
fixedWould you like weekly, on a fixed time, lessons, then you buy a fixed course per season, which lasts an average of 18 weeks. A year course consists of 2 seasons. Twice a year, the season starts mid-September and early February. On national holidays and in the summer holidays there are no classes.
The basic year is suited for beginners or those wishing to follow a proper refreshment course. In the year course all the basics of drawing and painting will be offered. You will be taught by different teachers, each in a module of 6 lessons, who teach in image aspects as form, composition, colour, space, shape, composition, space and the human figure. From the basic year, you could move up to the follow-up year.
A follow-up year is suited for advanced students and for those from the foundation year who wish to improve their skills of drawing and painting. Various art teachers give their lessons in predetermined modules.
Those solely interested in drawing or painting with a model could start straight away with the year Tekenen or Model & Portrait under guidance of one art teacher.
An individual year is suited for students who have mastered the basic skills and wish to advance in a specific subject, theme or technique in an individualistic manner. There will not be a fixed teaching program, students receive lessons on a weekly basis from one and the same teacher, with occasional a visiting tutor. In these meetings, you will work on the floor of your personal visual development.
The starting point of every course is a contemporary lesson that teaches the craft and techniques, but there is a contemporary and own interpretation to it. The art teachers are professional artists with a competence or experience in teaching. In the courses, you'll have the opportunity to develop your drawing and painting techniques under individual guidance. You work individually (in a group) with personal guidance of an art teacher. During work discussions, you get inspiring feedback of the art teacher and fellow students.Those interested can join in our annual art travel to deepen their interest in Visual Arts. Ateliers Westerdok has a platform for an annual exhibition for amateur artists.
Although the main language is Dutch, English-language students are welcome; all our art teachers will do the personal explanation and guidance in English.
